Technology coaches model and promote digital citizenship.
For a technology coach, digital citizenship is really a standard that connects to all others. It is the underpinning for our work. In our work as coaches with teachers and students, the standard of digital citizenship is something we want to always be in forefront of the mind. So modeling and demonstrating that standard is essential to what we do. The ISTE Standards for Coaches define digital citizenship as being made up of three separate indicators. Each one starts with the word model which helps to show the active work coaches should be doing. For me ISTE-C 5a is about equitable access for students to technology as well as to high quality instruction and technology integration. ISTE-C 5b is about teaching students about ethical dilemmas encountered when using technology and how to navigate them. Finally, ISTE-C 5c is about diversity, cultural understanding and empathy, and how growing one’s understanding in those areas will lead to a more inclusive, productive society and world.
